Project SHINE Launches Healthy Tots Program

Healthy tots

Project SHINE is launching its second Healthy Tot class located in the community room of Garden Court Apartments on 11th and Syracuse in Denver.  Healthy Tots began three years ago when it was noticed that our elders were not attending Health Literacy class because they were home babysitting grandchildren.  The class gave them a venue to learn about their health and the health of their grandchildren in a classroom that welcomed children and guardians to learn together.  As the demand has grown, we now have grandparents, fathers, mothers, aunts, or whomever is the guardian for the child all learning about staying healthy in the United States through music, reading, and workshops presented by medical residents from the University of Colorado.  We now see children counting while washing their hands, wearing safe appropriate shoes, coughing into the crook of their elbow,  parents choosing water instead of sugary juices for bottles, and last year, 17 families received library cards.
