The English Language Acquisition (ELA) program provides English language skills development to adults whose first language is a language other than English. Interested individuals start by attending an intake session which includes orientation, registration and assessment. Those who can commit to completing a minimum of 40 hours of instruction are placed in a class facilitated by a qualified adult educator. Courses are taught in 12 – 20 week sessions that meet 4-6 hours per week. Instruction includes skills development in reading, writing, listening and speaking as well as digital literacy, career exploration and job seeking skills. Those with advanced English language skills*, can participate in the Adult Basic Education (ABE) program.
In addition, adults in the ELA program will also be supported by the Student Navigator. Navigators meet with each participant within their first three weeks of class and throughout their participation in the classes to provide support with overcoming barriers to participating in classes, opportunities to increase community engagement, information about additional training or educational opportunities such as digital literacy (computer skills) classes, immigration legal resources, and connections to postsecondary education, workforce development and employment.
Registration dates and times for locations in the metro area are available here. For more information about these services, call 303-835-1128 or email firstname.lastname@example.org. If your organization would like to host an ELA class, contact Program Manager, Jessie Hawthorn, at 303-863-0188 x307 or email her at email@example.com.
